Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Hospice of Saint John.

Our family of volunteers generously commit time and resources to assisting patients in a myriad of ways from comforting patients to administrative support. Our volunteers are appreciated for whatever gifts they can provide.

Following orientation, volunteers become a critical component of our program and can participate in patients' homes, in nursing homes, in assisted living residences and in our facility.

Volunteer assignments include a wide range of activities; we match your talents with the specific needs of our patients.

We welcome you! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer and in learning more about how we can match your talents and schedule to our program, Please fill out our on-line application. For more information please call our Volunteer Manager, Jennifer Elliott at 303-232-7900.

Choose from a wide range of volunteer opportunities:

Administrative: Assist with mailings, data entry and special projects at our Lakewood facility or our Englewood office.

Animal Assisted Therapy: The Hospice of Saint John has partnered with American Humane to provide our patients with the highest quality Animal-Assisted Therapy. Registered teams, made up of one dog and one handler each from American Humane work one-on-one with patients to elevate mood and promote feelings of unconditional love.

Aromatherapy: Our Certified Clinical Aromatherapist works directly with patients to enhance physical and emotional well-being. The Aromatherapist diffuses essential oils, provides Aromatherapy rubs and collaborates with nurses about wound care, helping to close wounds more quickly. Essential oils are the essence of plants and can relieve shortness of breath, pain and anxiety.

Development / Fundraising: Participate with special events, social gatherings and other activities that raise funds and awareness.

Energy Therapies: Energy Therapies include Reiki and Healing Touch. Trained providers (at least Level 2) use techniques with their hands on or near the patient's body to smooth the energy in and around their bodies. This results in overall relaxation and increased comfort.

Gift Shop: Volunteers merchandise and sell items in our beautifully appointed gift shop.

Harp Therapy: Certified Therapeutic Harp Practitioners use harp at the bedside with the intention of healing, without curing. Harp Therapists match patients breathing to create a supportive environment which provides comfort for the patient and family.

Hospitality Cart: Volunteers serve patients and loved ones beverages and snacks.

Massage Therapy: Licensed Certified Massage Therapists use gentle massage techniques, such as reflexology, lymphatic drainage and Swedish massage to relieve symptoms of tension, pain, edema and discomfort.

Music Therapy: Board Certified Music Therapists use live music making experiences to prompt reminiscence with familiar and preferred music, ease shortness of breath by leading patients in therapeutic singing and distracting patients from pain through song choice and live music listening.

Photography / Video Recordings: Trained volunteers facilitate recording of life stories or messages for loved ones.

Social Volunteer: Volunteers provide companionship for patients, run errands and fill other requests, such as respite care so family members can take care of other responsibilities or relax.

Sound Therapy: Certified Sound Therapists use a series of tuning forks on or near the body to balance the patient's energy fields for a relaxation response.

Stylist: Licensed hair and nail specialists pamper patients in patients' homes and in our facility.

Transition Team: Trained volunteers stay with patients "on watch" (death is imminent) to provide companionship and comfort.
