Patients and Families

Medical Social Workers help the patient and the families secure legal and financial assistance, teach personal coping techniques and counsel patients and family members. Social workers also put families in touch with other community resources that they may need.

Support

Pastoral counselors provide non-denominational counsel to any patient or family members who request this service. Such counsel helps patients and families cope with feelings of guilt, anger, frustration, and sorrow. If requested, our counselors will work with families’ clergy.

Financial Counseling

Our Patient Accounts staff are always available to discuss any financial issues. Staff can help explain financial records and help patients families learn what to expect in the future.

Physical/Speech/Occupational Therapies

Therapies are not often thought of in correlation with hospice but regaining lost abilities can sometimes be very comforting to a patient and family.

Bereavement Counseling

Bereavement support is provided for the family and close friends to aid in the healing process. Support groups, one-on-one counseling, newsletters and telephone correspondence are available to provide comfort. These services generally are available for twelve months after the death of a loved one and are available to all members of the community.

Professionally Trained Volunteers

Volunteers are an essential part of our organizations. They provide a variety of support including personal care, companionship and support to office staff. Volunteers are such a special part of our program and we welcome all those who would like to become a part of the Hospice of Saint John.

Complementary Therapies

The Complementary Therapies include Aroma, Harp, Massage, Music, and Sound Therapies, Animal-Assisted Activities, and Relaxation Touch. All therapies are available at our Inpatient facility, and nearly all are available to our Homecare patients. Research has shown that patients receiving Complementary Therapies have an improved Quality of Life. Patients, families, and staff alike have responded with enthusiasm to these therapeutic interventions.
