Our History

The Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem

The Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem was founded in 1048 to care for the ill and wounded traveling to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Since 1048, Order members (known as Knights and Dames of Malta), have taken formal vows of generosity, charity and hospitality.


In 1977, the Hospice of Saint John, was founded by Father Paul von Lobkowitz, O.S.J. of the Order of Saint John. The mission of the Hospice of Saint John continues to be directed by the Order and reflects these commitments in all aspects of patient care.
